Overview

Our oral and maxillofacial team is dedicated to offering patients the highest standard in surgical care today. To deliver the best possible surgical outcomes for your oral health and smile, board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Michael Kuzmik often uses an advanced technique known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP can be incorporated as an adjunctive service into a range of oral surgery treatments. Safe and effective, PRP is sourced from your own blood and is utilized within surgical areas to promote healing and regeneration of gum and bone tissue. PRP offers a minimally invasive treatment option and minimizes your risk of infection following oral surgery. To learn more about the benefits of PRP therapy, contact one of our Virginia surgical centers and schedule a consultation with Dr. Kuzmik today.

Best Candidates

PRP can be very beneficial is increasing your body’s natural healing ability, as it contains a concentration of growth factors and platelets crucial to wound healing and blood clotting activities. This advanced technology can also assist in regenerating bone and gum tissues for improved oral health and smile aesthetics. PRP may be used in a number of procedures, including tooth extractions, bone grafting, jaw reconstructive surgery, and implant dentistry. Incorporating PRP therapy into oral surgery treatments can reduce bleeding and the risk of infections following your care and minimize post-operative discomfort. If you require an oral surgery procedure, Dr. Kuzmik will evaluate your oral health needs and determine if PRP is a treatment modality from which you may benefit.

What to expect

PRP therapy is simple and easy to perform onsite within our modern surgical practices. Dr. Kuzmik begins the PRP procedure by drawing a small tube of blood from your arm and placing the tube into our centrifuge machine. The centrifuge spins the blood sample for around 15 minutes while you relax comfortably in one of our treatment chairs. During this process, the blood plasma separates from other blood components. Dr. Kuzmik will add saline and additional fluids to the blood plasma and then mix the solution. He will then use PRP derived from your own blood during your oral surgery procedure to promote healing and tissue regeneration in treatment areas.

Follow-up

Because PRP uses your own blood, the process is safe and typically free from the risk of an adverse or allergic reaction. The process is also designed to increase the rate of healing and tissue regeneration in surgical sites. Following your PRP therapy, our team will inform you of how to care for your treatment areas as your mouth heals. We will also schedule a follow-up visit for you with Dr. Kuzmik so that he can check your healing and monitor your tissue regeneration progress.

Insurance Coverage

Because PRP therapy is an adjunctive procedure, it may or may not be covered by dental insurance. Our administrative team will call your insurance provider and review your covered benefits. We will let you know of your personal costs associated with PRP therapy and review the convenient payment methods we accept. Patient financing with CareCredit® may also be an option if you are not using dental insurance for your procedure.
